The management of Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) has provided scholarship opportunities for candidates who finished S6 but didn’t get sufficient results for them to join degree programmes of their choice.

Last week, Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) together with the Ministry of Education and Sports released results for Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) for the year 2022.

According to Dan. N Odongo, the executive director of UNEB, a total of 97,890 candidates registered for the 2022 UACE examination from 1,969 centres. Out of these, 18,382 candidates passed with one subsidiary pass, which qualifies them for diploma programmes at Universities and tertiary institutions.

However, majority of these wish to study degree programmes if any chance is given to them but many don’t know the available options for them to utilize and achieve their academic goals.

Recently, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) introduced the Higher Education Certificate as a University bridging/foundation programme in Uganda. This is intended for students who have successfully completed the UACE or its equivalent but who may not have attained sufficient grades to enroll for Diplomas or Degree programmes.

This special certificate is currently offered within various universities in Uganda, UTAMU inclusive.

At UTAMU, three categories of students can enroll for this programme and these include s6 leavers, ordinary certificate holders such as grade III certificate teachers, vocational qualifications, and students with foreign secondary school qualifications.

According to Ms. Grace Nakawunde the Academic Registrar of UTAMU, the first 100 students to enroll on this programme shall receive a 50% waiver on the tuition fee.

‘’In an effort to bolster support to students experiencing financial hardships due to the covid-19 crisis, we are offering partial scholarships of 50% of tuition fees for the first 100 applicants,’’ She stated.

The chairman Board of Directors at UTAMU, Prof. Venancius Baryamureeba advised that repeating S6 can cost between UGX 3 Million and 10 million for the three terms and of which it’s not automatic that a student will be able to perform better.

‘’As UTAMU we want to help A’level leavers not to go through such a hurdle and taking a Higher Certificate is a shorter and cheaper option as it enables A’level leavers to save money for at least one year for their university study,’’ he noted.
