Islamic University Students’ Union witnessed an intense battle of democracy on Saturday May 8, as Mr Wamini Siraj, the Electoral Commission chairperson, announced the results.
After a closely contested race, Mr Oguti Nasir emerged triumphant, securing a significant 52% of the votes, representing 1115 ballots.
This victory positions him as the 35th Guild President of the prestigious Islamic University In Uganda.
Mr Nasir’s victory did not come without fierce competition, as his sole opponent, Mr Ssebunya Shafie, put up a commendable fight.
However, Shafie fell short with 48% of the votes, representing 1040 ballots. The election results clearly reflected the will of the student body, with Nasir’s victory signifying a wave of change and a fresh perspective in student governance.
Stepping into the role of Guild President, Oguti Nasir carries the responsibility of leading the Islamic University Students’ Union, ensuring the representation of student interests and aspirations. His tenure will replace that of Ssekikofu Usama, whose leadership came to an end earlier in 2023.
Furthermore, the significance of Nasir’s win extends beyond the Guild Presidency, as he will also become a member of the University Council. As part of this highest decision-making body within the university, Nasir will contribute to shaping the future of the institution and making crucial decisions that impact the entire student community.
The Islamic University In Uganda eagerly awaits the official swearing-in ceremony of Oguti Nasir, which will mark the beginning of his term as the Guild President.
Students and faculty alike are optimistic about the potential for positive change and progressive initiatives under his leadership.
With his new role, Mr Nasir carries the hopes and aspirations of the student body, and the university community eagerly anticipates the vision he will bring to the table.
As the Islamic University In Uganda embarks on a new chapter of student governance, all eyes remain on Oguti Nasir, the newly elected Guild President, as he takes on the challenge of representing and advocating for the interests of the student body while contributing to the growth and development of the university as a whole.
