Last week as I was sharing a light moment with some of my colleagues at campus as we pushed a few bottles of beer, I was left amused and in total shock of what they had to say about contraception especially in relation to condoms and morning after-pills.
Apparently, most of these folks stock Postinor in plenty at their hostels which they often give to random girls who often come for sex and to make it more interesting, they carry Postinor in their back packs just in case a sexual moment arose and the pull out failed. Yes, it’s a good thing to use contraception because it reduces on the chances of being a young father or mother, but what bothers me most is the fact that many of these chaps at university don’t really care about their health.
Am not saying that if they got Malaria or fever they wouldn’t go to the hospital, No, it’s worse than that. These are sexually active ninjas that go around having sex or are called by random girls for random sex but don’t even care to use a condom. Get me well, Postinor might protect you from becoming a young father or a young mother but it won’t save you from HIV, Syphilis, Gonorrhea and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
I believe that the growing need and use of contraceptive methods especially use of morning after-pills and IUDs has somewhat caused to the increase of HIV/AIDs spread in Uganda if not in the whole world, people are forgetting the ultimate use of a condom, it’s like students are more concerned with not having a kid at an early age than they are about contracting HIV.
I think Postinor should be used as backup if the condom broke or when you forget to use a condom because you had many drinks the previous night but not used as a substitute for a condom, sexually transmitted diseases are real and HIV is life threatening, unless of course you trust your sexual friends or your partner, but you wouldn’t bet your life on chance, get that machete dressed, use a condom.
