President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has given orders to wife and Education minister, Janet Kataaha Museveni to establish a Constituent College of Agriculture in the Karamoja region attached to Gulu University.
In a letter dated July 1, Ministers of Education and Sports and Finance, Planning and Economic Development suggests that both ministries start the process of establishing this constituent College for the people of Karamoja.
“During my campaign trail in Karamoja sub-region, the community requested governement to establish Gulu University Constituent College of Agriculture in Karamoja,” part of the letter reads.
The leadership of Karamoja region headed by Bildad Moses Adome, MP, Jie County, Kotido District and also a former student at Gulu University are currently in talks with the Gulu based University authorities to lobby that the constituent College be established in Kotido District.
If this College is established, it will be the first of its kind in the whole Karamoja Region. Analysts also suggest that this will bring about an overhaul in the whole agricultural practice in the sub-region, increase literacy and more political competition is also likely.
Some notable figures from the Karamoja region are however not satisfied with this move, maintaining that, Karamoja region needs a University of its own and not just a branch of another University.
