Kyambogo and Makerere University recently voted their new guild presidents this month and we know the core reasons why they succeeded. In case you had forgotten, Makerere’s guild president elect Papa Were Salim is the dude who carried his mattress from Wandegeya all the way to Parliament and vowed to sleep there following the controversial “age limit bill”.
Since then, Were was seen as a hero amongst Makerere students in the K’ogikwagato campaign something that later earned him popularity and later converted the popularity into votes- becoming the new guild president for Uganda’s biggest public University.
On the other hand, Kyambogo’s guild president elect Amanya German gained popularity when he took part in a strike last year when Kyambogo students were demonstrating over poor management and sanitation. German was among the students who knelt and prayed to God for the betterment of their University.
Since then German Amanya’s status at Kyambogo changed which later helped him scoop a flag bearer post for the party of FDC at Kyambogo. Few months later, German was elected the new guild president of Kyambogo University.
When analyzed critically, it is clear that strikes gave the two new guild presidents a big boost in terms of popularity in their respective Universities. It should be noted that the pair share the same political party which happens to be FDC.
