In a letter dated 15th August 2018, the Makerere University General assembly chairman Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi wrote to the first lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni informing her of the council’s incompetence in handling a number of issues ranging from poor decision making, financial mismanagement, declining student enrollment, among others.
According to Dr. Kamunyu, the general assembly that sat on August 3rd and later adjourned to August 10th observed with great concern on the persistence decline of the University performance especially matters related to the roles of the council.
“Members observed with great concern the persistence decline in the overall performance of the University council in playing their oversight role. Particularly, the decline is observed by constant interference with the employment system by appointments board which is threatening stability in the University, declining student enrollment as a result of poor decision making, financial mismanagement and poor caliber of members of council not befitting Makerere University.” Reads part of the letter.
After extensive deliberations, the general assembly passed a vote of no confidence in the current university council and went ahead to request the Education minister to dissolve it with immediate effect.
The letter was signed by the assembly’s chairman Dr. Kamunyu who also doubles as the chairperson of MUASA as well as the assembly’s General Secretary Dr. Michael Walimbwa.
