On his way to “turn Makerere University upside down”, the university’s Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has replaced yet another staff member from the Ivory Tower. The latest indicates that Ritah Namisango has been rendered “powerless” as the Public relations officer and Dr Mohammed Kiggundu Musoke has been already appointed as the acting Manager Communications and International Relations.
The newly appointed Dr Kiggundu is a senior lecturer in the department of Humanities and Language Education, who has now taken over the task of providing overall leadership to the communications office and overseeing the universities communications policy, for a period of one year.
It should be recalled that Dr. Kiggundu handed over his leadership for the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) in February 2018 to the current chairperson Dr Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi .
According to a letter dated January 18th, the Human Resources Director, Andrew Abunyang states that the Vice Chancellor has authorized Dr. Kiggundu’s appointment, “The Vice Chancellor has authorized offer of an appointment to you as a Manager, Communications and International Relations in the office of the Vice Chancellor for a period of one (1) year with effect from 18 January 2019,” reads part of the letter.
Among other duties, Kiggundu is also expected to offer secretarial support to the office of the Vice Chancellor in communications by holding monthly press briefings, monitoring news articles, reports and periodicals about the university operations and monitoring as well as reviewing the university’s coverage in the media.
Ms Namisango has been handling all the above tasks.
