Six students from Kyambogo University who were arrested during last week’s strike against the 12-week tuition policy were yesterday released on Police Bond. The students include; Seth Nyesiga, Dismus Ssenyange, Owen Ronald Baguma, Moses Otukei, Oscar Hamura and Chol Peter Agok.
The Director of Public Prosecutions returned their case file to police for further inquiries yesterday. It should be recalled that the file had earlier been sent to the Nakawa Chief Magistrates’ Court for sanctioning on charges of inciting violence and causing destruction of property.
According to the Kyambogo bursar’s office, a fine of 50,000 Shillings was to be charged on anyone who failed to clear tuition within the specified time (first six weeks of the semester). The policy also suggests that all students who fail to clear their tuition within the first 12 weeks of the semester would be forced to take a dead Semester.
The tuition policy left Kyambogo students with no option but to hit the streets of the Banda-based campus protesting against the policy. The strike left property destroyed and some students injured.
Kyambogo’s newly elected Guild President Tundulu Jonathan revealed last Friday that they (students) are willing to engage with the administration to see that this policy is scrapped.
