Kyambogo University Students petition NCHE over E-Learning system, Demand Face-to-Face lectures

Following the recent declaration by the President Elect that, for those who didn’t receive the memo, required all Higher learning institutions to cease and desist any prospects of physical lectures that majority of the public Universities were initiating, students of the once “engineering giant” Kyambogo have come out under the leadership of attention seeking guild presidential aspirants to petition these directives.

In a letter addressed and stamp-received by the NCHE (attached at the footer of this article), the student fraternity outlined a number of factors that had driven them to this level of distress and near insanity amongst which included the fact that the ODeL system only favored students prepared for it. A percentage which only reflects the minority of the entire population. “We don’t think that students have learnt anything though the online classes and some institutions just conducted the online classes forsake of completing the courses rather than meeting the teaching-learning objectives. In the same same line, we reiterate that the Online Readiness Survey that was submitted to NCHE that as quoted by the Kyambogo University academic registrar in her circular dated 8th December 2020 for clearance to deliver academic programs using ODeL for majority programs marginalised the majority students,” the letter to NCHE reads in part.

In a clearly home-based amateur “press conference” (if we can call it that), students and student leaders came out to express their honest disappointment and frustration with the NCHE alleging bias given that other public and private university continuing students, exclusive of Kyambogo had reported and completed their semesters and were set to proceed into the next year of study.

“We want to assure the NCHE that we saw the lies submitted about the survey carried out in Kyambogo University to justify the ODeL system. We want to assure them that the survey only favored those that are already facilitated and capable of handling these conditions which is only but a few and so we want the NCHE to put these student challenges into consideration,” this campus website reporter translated and quoted John Mbaziira, Guild presidential aspirant during the said press conference.

It remains uncertain as to whether the NCHE nor less the University administration will put any of these considerations into play as no communication has come out from either party but what remains clear is that for the time being, physical lectures will be at a standstill and shall not commence.

Stay tuned to Campus Bee for further developments from Kyambogo University as they come about this story and feel free to comment with your reactions and opinions.
