Ali Matovu, a first year Bachelor of Arts in Education student of Metropolitan University was on Tuesday morning shot dead by a member of the Local Defence Unit (LDU). The incident happened at around 4am at the Namungoona based campus’ Faculty of Education and Humanities offices.
More details regarding Matovu’s death indicate that two LDU officers chased the deceased after seeing him carrying a computer monitor before shooting him.
“I heard that the student was seen carrying a monitor at around 4am from the ICT building. When the LDU personnel, who guard the university, saw him, they chased him and shot him a few metres from where he stole the monitor,” Brenda Atukwatse, a student at Metropolitan University said.
According to sources, computer theft at the university is rampant following the issuance of duplicate keys to students who want to access the laboratory.
“This is the third time computers are stolen from the ICT building, some staff duplicated the keys for the laboratory and gave them to this student,” the source said.
The two LDU personnel who were involved in Matovu’s death are reportedly behind bars as investigations kick off.
