VIDEO INTERVIEW: Makerere’s Arnold Tumuhairwe Talks Co-Founding HeiTrix Hoodies in Lockdown

Arnold Kennedy Tumuhairwe,22, is a Makerere University student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences. Together with his friend, Tumuhairwe founded HeiTrix Hoodies, a small company dealing in designing hoodies and shirts with cool designs.

The young business man met up with Campus Bee to talk business, career, and his future plans. First things first, Heitrix was established last year during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown that rendered campusers idle.

Unlike other students, the focused Tumuhairwe came up with the idea of branding hoodies and delivering them to clients amid the Pandemic.

“We were on a job hunt and even connections could not help us get the jobs we wanted so we tried to out-smart the market and decided that being creative was the only way out.” Tumuhairwe narrates.

“Right now we also added shirts to the collection and they be bearing unique designs. We go an extra mile and do something that is rarely seen like; cartooning people and including their cartoon features on the hoodies,” Tumuhairwe said.

The Makerere scholar further told this website that he was advised by his big brother to always set up businesses that need less costs. Tumuhairwe operates HeiTrix entirely online and plans are underway to set up a website in a bid to dive in a wider market.

“My big brother and his colleague called Julius always told me to always use the chances I get. So like if you get a chance to dodge a cost, always dodge that cost. That’s why we are now operating only online and we don’t have a work place yet.” Tumuhairwe said.

HeiTrix’s future plans are to start shipping merchandise to East Africa as they warm up to take over the entire continent once everything moves as planned. The businesses is however faced with some challenges among which are clients who want free deliveries even when they are far away from Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

While highlighting on some of the things his business has taught him, Tumuhairwe revealed that it is not good to always be money minded. He says it is good to like money but growing the businesses into a brand should always come first.
