Earlier last week, hundreds of Ugandans got a smile on their faces when they received covid-19 relief funds from the prime minister’s office. This was an initiative from the government of Uganda to assist people whose businesses were closed in the recently instituted lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19.
The process of compiling qualified Ugandans is still going on within different Municipalities and Cities across Uganda but many seem to be forgotten. It is on this note that one of the student leaders at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) has penned down a letter to the prime minister of Uganda Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja requesting her to consider stranded students as vulnerable.
According to the letter which was delivered to the Prime Minister’s office, Mayira Stuart a GRC representing Pharmaceutical Sciences cited that a number of students were unable to travel back to their homes as a result of hiked transport fairs at that time.
‘’I am writing to bring your kind consideration towards the starving students of MUST who involuntarily stayed behind in their respective hostels when the country was sent into a 42 days lockdown for different reasons. Many of which were lacking transport to dash to their respective homes,’’ He explained.
Mayira requested the Prime Minister to aid these students with any help/relief as way of saving them from starving since their parents are also seated at home due to the closure of their businesses.
Across Uganda, many University students especially the international students stayed around their universities since they were unable to travel back to their respective home countries. These have been calling for help from Good Samaritans to save them from starving while in their hostels.
