Worrying news hitting our news room illustrate that a section of Makerere University students stranded in hostels are crying out like toddlers for food relief. The top flight education Institution was closed earlier this month in accordance with the presidential directive of shutting all learning centers in the country in the wake of Covid-19 resurgence.
A developing report has disclosed on a national television; “A section of students from Makerere University who are stranded in their hostels after they failed to go home say they cannot find what to eat. These claim their parents failed to raise transport for them after fares were hiked.”
With the complete blockage of movements across districts, some students could not afford the hiked fares of transport to various upcountry destinations. This forced some students to lag behind in their hostels around Kikoni and Kikumi Kikumi (notable students’residential centres) under uncertainty about the Covid crisis.
As government looks out to support vulnerable groups, these “hungry intellectuals” should be thought about fairly before the situation turns dire. Rumor has it that some students have opted for desperate moves whose side effects are worse than Covid-19’s.
