It is never too late or too early to start. This is the belief of Wassajja Muhamad Ahmad, 21 and Semogerere Daniel Moxie, 22 of Kyambogo.
“I was inspired by my cousin brother who started business at the end of 2016. So when I got some little money I bought some tools and small materials and started.” States Wasajja, who makes the bags, before Semogerere markets and sells them off.
Wasajja the self-taught craftsman, says he has earned a lot from the business. “I get money, new friends and a nice living to mention but a few, all because of this business. So far no big challenges and not even a loss — I know it’s unbelievable.”
But what does Semogerere the marketer have to say? “I met Wassaja on social media while he was advertising his bags, so I gave him a deal that he accepted, and now we are working together. He makes the bags and I do the marketing. Mainly the business is done online, people order for bags and we deliver.”
He continues, “Well sometimes we run out of material, like the main skins we use for making the bags. Then as you know some customers are so disturbing but then that’s part of business. Transport is another challenging issue: we get orders from people that are so far like in some other districts, so we end up losing that money because we fail to reach them at times. Then also our current sawing machine is weak, there is need for a new one.” The young man explained the challenges they face.
About the revenue, Senkubuge was quick to respond, “We sell each bag at 30,000 Ugx, that’s for the usual size that we post. Then we also sell in bulk at 20,000 Ugx.We allow orders like if someone wants a specific design, they can order and we make it.”
The duo also had some advice to campusers,”Fellow youths, use your brains, hands and legs plus the power that God gave you, and get yourself to another step economically. Entrepreneurship is all about persistence and risk taking.” Senkubuge says.
The craftsman also had a piece of advice, “I would like to advise anybody who reads this to go for what they want and know they can make it through teaching themselves like I did.”
From me and the team at Campus Bee, we are proud of you Ahmad and Daniel. Keep the hustle up.
