Sustaining oneself at campus is no easy thing yet everyone wants to emulate a cool lifestyle they’ve imagined since their secondary days. The cool girls, fashion trends, partying and good food all come at a cost that is usually a niche higher than our parent’s pocket-money. While others decide to steal, defraud or stay poor and sullen, Ronald Kyeyune went for the big thing, coming up with a business idea.
Kyeyune, a first year student of Accounts and financing at Multitech Business School who sells fruits door to door in the suburbs of Ntinda, Kireka, Kiwatule and Naalya. This youngster first came up with a business idea in his vacation when he got fed up with the exploitation at his working place.
“They used to give us our money however basing on the amount of work and the huge profits they got from it, we were literally being given peanuts. Kyeyune explained his turning point.
Kyeyune decided to make an association of 50 Kyambogo College School old students to make business group they called Elites association. The group agreed on making Elite fruits as our first project after many ideas were brought up.
With seven of the fifty association members working hands on, the team goes to Kalerwe every morning at 5 a.m to buy fruits which they prepare from one of the members home in Naalya where a parent granted a room.They then hawk the fruits in different locations during the day.
The business which started with a capital of 140k now earns about 20-30k profits on a good day on which some amount is saved to be enjoyed by the share holders on a later date.which they save
“I had to put my pride in check for the greater good and it is so far so good.” Kyeyune commented.
Benefits of the business
Kyeyune sites that he now caters for his personal luxuries like clothes, books and pocket-money leaving his father to only search for tuition. Kyeyune also shared that the business has kept the group busy in vacation and the experience gotten is immense.
Challenges
The business’s challenges include finance management, the fluctuating prices for fruits in the market yet the business packaged products can’t be changed, high operational expenses plus high costs of attaining legal licenses to start supplying supermarkets.
Business prospects
Elite fruits plans to not only rely on door to door business but also supply supermarkets, venture into making juice and hopefully start a restaurant and cafeteria.
