Third year Sumaia Namuyingo is a Mak journalism student who gives a touch of gold to cloth material she makes. Sumaia is a fashion designer all through and her fashion sense is indisputable which made her decide to venture in the fashion business in 2012. Sumaia narrates that she started her business at home making curtains and cushion covers before later venturing into dresses and other garnets.
Her first capital of 300,000shs bought her a sewing machine and though still operating on a small scale, she sews and makes her own designs which are an eye tantalizer. Before she went commercial, all her designs were draped on herself and her sense of style is one even the blind appreciate. After a long series of designing herself, she decided to also dress the world and this has turned up well for her because it has opened doors for her, made her more friends like Raphael Kasule who is among Uganda’s top designers plus it has also enabled her grow her skills.
From sewing clothes, Sumaia has been able to cover her functional fees and occasionally her tuition. Some of her most profitable deals were a 200,000shs dress she designed for the 2015 Mavuno host. However, like any other business has good and bad days, her bad days are when she receives one or few customers and then plus customers who pay cheaply yet the fabric is quite costly and also takes time.
