In a bid to bolster skills development and spur employment growth within Uganda’s vibrant tourism and hospitality sector, the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities has announced a new apprenticeship program. With a vision to align with Objective 4 of the National Development Plan III (NDP III) and the commitment outlined in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Manifesto, this initiative aims to enhance the capacity of the labor force along the tourism value chain.
The apprenticeship program is designed to achieve several key objectives:
- Provide hands-on working experience to professionals interested in pursuing careers within the tourism and hospitality industry.
- Equip young graduates with relevant skills, facilitating their transition from academia to the workforce while enhancing their productivity and employability.
- Foster the development of locally skilled workers, reducing dependency on foreign labor within the hospitality sector.
- Engage employers in training initiatives to ensure graduates possess skills that meet the demands of the labor market.
The apprenticeship positions are available in five distinct trades or departments, including cooks, waitrons, receptionists, bakers, and tour guides. With a total of 100 vacancies up for grabs, applicants are required to hold qualifications in Tourism, Leisure, and Hospitality from recognized universities or institutions. Furthermore, candidates must have completed their studies between 2020 and 2024 and should currently be unemployed. Applicants are advised to specify their preferred trade of interest during the application process.
Interested individuals are encouraged to submit their application letters along with their Curriculum Vitae (CV), copies of academic certificates and transcripts, and a National ID. The deadline for submissions is May 10, 2024.
