For the 14 years, Kyambogo university has been in existence and has notably managed to stand out and uphold it’s reputation as per producing the best “Teachers ” in the nation. You ever ask yourself why students who obtained the various degrees in education from KYU are different right from character ,dress code to the matters of articulation when it comes to the teaching?
First and foremost let me take you back in history, before KYU came in existence, there were three different institutions namely institute of teacher education (ITEK) which is the now faculty of education , Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK) and Uganda National Institute for Special needs (UNISE) seemingly all these institutions had a foundation of training educators ranging from lower school to higher level educators and this is one reason the trend has been kept up to-date even after the merger of the three institutions into one (KYU).
Ever since its setup the university under the faculty of education arrived to produce quality and competent teachers, Teacher Educators and pedagogical leaders suiting the national and global trends of society today.
“We are guided by the desire to maintain our cherished values and reputation in moulding and mentoring men and women who model best practices in the education sector and the world of work.” commented one of tutors from the faculty
The faculty of education has occasionally over the past years been admitting the highest number of students and this has made it the biggest faculty in the university making it a key sector that has always been given priority in planning. This explains why it has enough facilities, notably the well stocked west end library amidst the inadequacies faced by the whole university.
You’ve heard of the students there being stigmatised for “being too smart ” let me give you a small hint on why it’s so. Like I said earlier the college of education is one that has a proffesional upbringing and trust me once you join this faculty with skimpy outfits, damaged pants and slay queen dresses you wont fit in, it’s the law school version of kyambogo.
“We have a Professional code of conduct which roots from the attire it’s self, we are literally in law school as people say, this is more than law school. I mean a teacher should be dressed up like teacher in an exemplary manner not in a slayer manner “Nabatanzi Enid a diploma student commented.
Additionally the institution has adopted an integrated approach to education, it focuses on vocationalising education at all levels and with this it trains teachers to approach the teaching process as a more practical process intended towards revolutionalising the whole education set up.
The University has also acknowledged and embraced various fields that are believed to be part and parcel of education talk. For example science and technology, humanities, business management and entrepreneurship, education, as well as special needs education. With all these skills, graduates majoring in education from KYU hold their heads up high.
The faculty conducts courses in History of Education, Sociology of Education, Philosophy of Education, Comparative Education (including Contemporary issues), Economics of Education and Educational Administration. It’s is also mandated to offer professional guidance and support in Educational Foundations to affiliated institutions of the university.
After that brief insight I’m sure you know why KYU still stands out for producing the best teachers in the nation.
