Customary, the Christmas holiday is not just a time to take a break from the onerous times of the year but also a season of unmatched joy.
For a university student, it is a well deserved recess after a year’s battle with coursework, tests, exams and other academic commitments.
Over the years, it has now become a trend for universities to schedule the final semester exams before the festive season. This can be construed as a move to allow students prepare for their travels in advance.
A great deal of students be counting down days to when they can escape the precarious conditions of hostel life – home becomes the perfect escape.
However, there are some “legends” who don’t abide by the normalcy. These guys would rather starve in rentals than step back home for a week. For reasons best known to them, the enjoyments in Kampala during this time are unmatched.
The legends trade ‘family time’ for R&R since the former comes with curfew. The paradox these young adults find themselves in, is indescribable.
Some parents mind while others settle for the “we have an assignment to finish” kind of excuses. Regardless, when the dust settles, the truth often sprouts.
For the ‘good children’ that go back home, the taste of a decent meal is a worthy reward. Unless you are a planned kid, for most campusers, the price that comes with being home is the restriction on movements, late night calls, hosting your partner, sips of pombe and having to do chores.
Perhaps thats why our dear legends choose to stay around campus – the price of freedom, uninterrupted choices.
Christmas, what a concept, the lads question its intensity. “It’s just one day,” so they say. Only until they realize it’s the only time available to lobby for an increment on pocket money. Oh wait, do the legends still need this?
Nonetheless, nothing weighs down the attention granted to the festive period, not in our traditional Ugandan setting at least.
Don’t be surprised to see a message from your coursemate, especially your crush, they’re not just wishing you a Merry Christmas – it’s an opportunity to say hi.
In any case, exchanging gifts during this time is not a common trait but at least anyone can deliver season’s greetings and wishes via a Whatsapp message. Don’t hesitate, reach out to him or her, it’ll count.
Anyway, it’s been a pleasure, the Bee gotta go for some Christmas honey. Ciao!
