Metropolitan International University has stirred up a storm on social media after suspending its guild president Mukisa John Jackson.
Mukisa was suspended from the university for at least a semester (August to December 2023) because he organised a protest in which students expressed their grievances towards the administration.
According to the institution’s vice chancellor, who many netizens only got to know following Mukisa’s suspension, he (Mukisa) defied him when he ignored his wisdom to call off the protest.
Metropolitan University has also withdrawn the bursary it had given to Mukisa. And if one closely reads in between the lines, one can see that Mukisa narrowly survived being dethroned from office.
Prior his suspension, Mukisa was detained and it is rumoured that the university wanted him to resign from his position before he could be set free.
It can only take a brave institution to take such a bold decision of suspending its guild president – who is literally its first student.
Such a decision is risky and may damage an institution’s public image. However, in this case, we need to agree that for a little-known institution, this is a win for them.
Metropolitan International University has captured our attention minus investing in advertisement. I know for a fact that many of you are wondering where it is even located.
Late Irish playwright Oscar Fingal Wilde said there is one thing worse than being talked about, that is not being talked about at all. This is alternatively stated as no publicity is bad publicity.
Whereas suspending its guild president may not have been well thought of, it has got former, current guild presidents and the media talking.
Who in the world knew that I would write this opinion? To me, this is a win for Metropolitan International University and it is bad-good publicity. In fact, whoever made the decision to suspend Mukisa should be made head of the institution’s public relations team.
