Anger Spreads in Ibanda as Residents Reject Election Outcome

Anger and frustration continue to grow in Ibanda Municipality following the announcement that Peter Agaba had won the parliamentary election with 14,279 votes, defeating independent challenger Innocent Mwine Bakamuhara, who obtained 12,904 votes.

For many residents, the narrow margin has only intensified suspicions that the final tally may not reflect what happened on polling day.

Several voters claim that results announced at individual polling stations indicated strong support for Bakamuhara in key areas including Bufunda, Kagongo, and Bisheshe divisions.

But according to Bakamuhara’s supporters, the most significant discrepancies appeared in Kashangura Ward, where they believe a large portion of his votes were removed during the final declaration.

These claims have sparked heated debates across the municipality, with many voters openly questioning the integrity of the electoral process.

The controversy has been compounded by the role of local political actors, particularly Jovrine Kaliisa, whose alleged remarks during the campaign have resurfaced.

Some residents claim Kaliisa had earlier told voters that Bakamuhara would never be declared winner regardless of how many votes he received.

The allegations have intensified frustration among voters and created a perception that the election was predetermined.

In one incident illustrating the growing anger, a family reportedly rejected a condolence contribution of 50,000 shillings sent by Kaliisa after losing a relative.

Community members say the rejection reflected the depth of resentment many residents feel following the election.

Meanwhile, Bakamuhara has indicated that he is exploring legal options to challenge the outcome, noting that his supporters are urging him to reclaim what they believe was their victory.

As the debate continues, Ibanda Municipality remains deeply divided over the legitimacy of the election.
