The first rally of Makerere Guild Elections 2018 went down yesterday evening at Complex Hall where over 13 candidates delivered their manifestos to Makerere University students. The competitive race includes candidates from the ruling party NRM, DP, FDC, and the independents.
The NRM candidate, Prize Mari Ahimbisibwe proved that Makerereans have many reasons to vote for her other than just her sizzling beauty. As a second year student doing a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Ahimbisibwe delivered a powerful manifesto where she tackled penitent issues at the biggest public university in the country like gender equality, being a voice to the voiceless, as well as pushing for students’ rights.
“I am a student who has a dream, that I will lead Makerere students, I will be a voice to the voiceless, and I will be a leader who will bring about student consultative leadership,” Ahimbisibwe vowed.
All candidates had an obligation to leave some money for a group of Complex Hall elders- something that they termed as “pleasing the ancestors of Complex.” Those who donated little money were denied a chance to step on the podium to solicit for votes. In addition to pleasing ancestors, all candidates were tasked to open the rally by dancing to a song of their choice.
Following the pending approval of DP’s candidate Kinene Ssemakula Edward, the rally was characterized by disorganization as UYD supporters kept screaming and jubilating throughout the rally. According to the Makerere electoral commission, Kinene’s candidature is still pending. Meaning he will not be allowed to hold any rally until he is confirmed.
The rallies resume today at Galloway House and tomorrow at the University’s Main building.
