The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has thrown away a petition to block Samanya Isaac, a third year student of Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration to contest as IUIU Electoral Commission Chairperson 2021 during online elections slated for tomorrow , Saturday, 4th September, 2021.

A third year student of Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Abdulnur Nuhu Abdullahi petition Samanya’s nomination for the post saying he was not eligible since he was the Minister of Campus Affairs in the outgoing Islamic University Students’ Union (IUSU) Government.

“A candidate nominated by the names Samanya Isaac with registration number 118-023071-17961 is a serving Minister in the IUSU Government, and he holds the Campus Affairs Ministry, a position that requires approval of IUSU Parliament. Under IUSU Constitution, Article 27 (d) is to the effect that there shall be a chairperson of Electoral Commission who shall not be a member in the outgoing Government,” Abdulnur says in a petition that Campus Bee has seen.

Despite producing a letter on Samanya’s resignation from his post, Abdulnur argues that he (Samanya) didn’t not follow legal procedures to resign.

“Mr Samanya claimed to have resigned from the position though we are asking the criteria he used which is irrespective with the provision of IUSU Constitution as amended in 2010, under article 38 of the IUSU Constitution is to the effect that any member of IUSU Government may resign from the office upon giving a satisfactory and reasonable ground, whenever there is an intention of any IUSU Official the person shall give a resignation letter to the Guild President is he is a cabinet minister and shall give a copy to the Guild speaker. Article 38 (3) is to the effect that all resignations shall be tendered before the Parliament,” Says Abdulnur in the petition.

Both Guild President and Guild Speaker of the outgoing IUSU Government verified that Samanya Isaac followed all the legal procedures to resign from his post.
