Kwaga Patience Denise is the chairperson of Electoral Commission 2021 at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) after beating former Guild Cabinet Minister of Campus Affairs, Samanya Isaac during elections held on Saturday, 4th September, 2021 at the Main Campus in Mbale City.
Patience who is a third year Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) student- Accounting major managed to scoop 177 votes against Isaac’s 137 to become the fourth female student in the history of the Islamic University in Uganda to hold the position.
Speaking in an interview with Campus Bee after declaration of the finals results, the IUIU EC chairperson assured students of credible and fair guild elections.Patience says she is committed to form a neutral electoral commission.
“I am looking forward to form a neutral electoral commission at this mighty university. I will make sure that the e-voting system is properly managed and has no loopholes,” she told Campus Bee.
Patience says all eligible students will be allowed to vote in the Guild Elections slated to take place on Saturday, 25th September, 2021. In his remarks, the Dean of Students (University Coordinator) of the university, Dr Sulaiti Kabali assured the new chairperson that his office is committed to work with her for to manage guild elections that will meet the expectations of the students fraternity at the evergreen campus.
Dr Kabali says the Islamic University in Uganda will continue with the online voting approach to match digitalization drive that the institution is undertaking.
“I want to assure you that IUIU will continue with E-Voting and I am asking all students to collaborate with the administration to make this a success as it has been witnessed today. I know there are some challenges but the ICT department will continue improving the E-voting platform,” Dr Salaiti says.
The eligible students to vote were 2021. 1033 were males while 1060 were females. These students are those who have fully registered for the second semester of 2020/2021 academic year.
Students who managed to cast their vote were 311 representing 15 percent of the total eligible voters. Among all the students who managed to vote , 164 were males while 147 were females.
