Kyambogo University is gearing up for fresh by-elections to fill a string of vacant student leadership seats after the shock dismissal of its Guild President, Benjamin Akiso.
The Guild Speaker, Rt. Hon. Atuhaire Sharon, has summoned the Guild Representative Council (GRC) to a special sitting on Friday, August 22, 2025, where the roadmap for by-elections will be unveiled.
In her notice, the Speaker cited Article 9 of the Guild Constitution, which obliges the GRC to notify the Electoral Commission and conduct by-elections within 28 days of a vacancy. The sitting will also tackle other pressing issues, including the absence of a deputy speaker, the closure of campus gates, the standoff over the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), and long-delayed student IDs.
“The by-election process must begin immediately to restore stability and student representation,” the Speaker declared.
The move follows weeks of uncertainty after the Guild President and several council members were ousted, plunging student leadership into disarray. The coming polls are expected to be highly competitive, with fresh contenders already eyeing the vacant seats.
Analysts say the by-elections will be a litmus test for Kyambogo’s student democracy, which has often been marred by bitter rivalries and political intrigue.
As the countdown to Friday’s sitting begins, the campus is abuzz with speculation: who will step up to claim the Guild Presidency, and can the by-elections restore faith in student leadership at Kyambogo?
Meanwhile, the dismissed Guild Boss, is contesting for Toroma County Member of Parliament in the forthcoming 2026 general elections under the National Unity Platform flag.
