National Unity Platform Flagbearer Samuel Nakayenga has been arrested ahead of Kyambogo University guild polls.
Nakayenga was arrested with eight members of his campaign team on Wednesday October 25th, 2023, with only hours left to the start of the guild polls.
According to a statement by the party’s head of institutions Musiri David, the arrested students are being detained at Jinja Road police station.
“Nakayenga Samuel and eight members of his campaign team were brutally arrested yesterday evening and are being detained at Jinja Road police station,” the statement reads in part.
Musiri says the arrests raise concerns of fairness and integrity of the electoral process, and that it is now the third time their candidate is being frustrated.
“This is now the third time the administration is trying to frustrate our candidate because of their selfish interests in this election. The circumstances surrounding these arrests remain unclear…,”he adds.
Musiri further calls upon all Kyambogo University students to remain vigilant and protect their vote amidst the ongoing intimidation.
Kyambogo University students go to the polls today (October 26th) to elect their 20th guild president and Wafula Edrine Koholo’s successor.
