Magomu Ivan, a third year law student at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Main Campus is the new president of IUIU Main Campus Law Student Society (LSS).
He takes over leadership from Muwonge Ukasha who was IUIU LSS Interim President. Magomu claimed the post after winning online elections held on Saturday , 23rd October, 2021.
He managed to scoop 120 votes beating three others in the race. In his victory speech, Magomu promised law students that he will work for the betterment of their faculty. He commended all law students for giving him an opportunity to lead them.
“This is a struggle and I want to thank first year students for being revolutionary, second year students for being fundamental , third year students for being the future, fourth year students for being the pillar and diploma students for being vigilant,” he said.
Other contestants (all third year students) namely Mutawo Godfrey got 94 votes, Odoi Henry got 57 votes and Tulyazalwa Mark managed 42 votes. 610 Law students were eligible voters but only 316 students voted successfully.
This was the first time for IUIU LSS to hold virtual elections. The students resorted to online elections in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic that forced Government to close universities.
