Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, on 06th April, suspended two students and Mitchell Hall custodian for participating in an electoral debate commonly known as kimeza at the hill.
These include Byaruhanga Isaac (Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery), Muganga Arnold (Bachelor of Arts Drama & Film) and Mr. Dhubanji Xavier (Custodian Mitchell Hall).
According to the suspension, the VC states that he received a report from the Mitchell Hall administration and the Chief Security Officer that the suspended students participated in an unauthorized Electoral debate (kimeza) in Mitchell Hall between the hours of 8pm and 9pm on the evening of 5th April 2023.
He pinned the duo to have particularly started the fight that resulted in the severe injury of one of the University students, a one Sserunjogi Robert who is, as a result, currently hospitalised at Makerere University Hospital.
“If these allegations are found to be true, you contravened Section 12(1)(e) of the Makerere University Students Regulations 2015 which provides that every student shall at all times conduct him/herself in a manner that shall not compromise the security of others. Your conduct further contravenes Section 8(2)(b) of the Regulations which prohibits non permissible conduct including fights and all forms of indiscipline,” the VC stated in the respective suspension letters.
“By the authority of Section 6 (1)(d) of the said Makerere University Students Regulations I hereby suspend you from Makerere University with immediate effect until further notice. You will be invited to appear before the Students Disciplinary Committee for an interaction regarding this matter on a date to be communicated to you in due course,” he added.
Regarding the custodian’s case, Prof Nawangwe’s report indicated that Mr. Dhubanji Xavier was the custodian supposed to be on duty that evening but absent without authorisation or permission for the whole night.
“These allegations, if true, constitute a fundamental breach of your terms and conditions of service with the University as a Custodian. In order to ensure safety and security of the Students, Staff and property of the University Community especially at Mitchell Hall, I hereby interdict you from University service with immediate effect in accordance with Section 9.8.2.3 (b) of the Makerere University Human Resources Manual 2009 (as amended, December 2022). Further, you are required to submit a handover report as well as handover all University property in your possession to the Warden, Mitchell Hall,” the VC notified.
This website understands that the trio already vacated university premises as they await a hearing from the administration.
