Makerere University’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) guild aspirant Saviour Kicaber has vowed to reduce the powers of Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.
He revealed this following the suspension of National Unity Platform’s guild aspirants on Monday, June 27, whom he is competing with for the same position of guild presidency in the same guild race,
“Yes, we intend to reduce on Nawangwe’s powers by pushing for 50 percent student representation on the University Tribunal,” Kicaber lamented.
The aspirants were first arrested on Friday, June 24, as they tried to access the university’s freedom square where NUP had organized a general assembly.
The victims of the indefinite suspension include Bbosa Edrine Price, Mwesigwa Calvin Mugambwa and Katusabe Kenneth.
These were suspended together with Roy Rugumayo, the chief campaign manager for Mwesigwa Calvin Mugambwa.
According to Saviour, if students are represented well on the committee, it is the only way of minimizing the increased students’ adjournment at the institution.
“Students representation will phase out the unnecessary suspensions and help to air out students perspective during appeals before committee,” he added.
The guild contender said that students can not be handled effectively without the students themselves.
The disciplinary committee was created in 2017 under the Kato Paul government with an intention for reconciliation, however, it has since then become one sided and is often at times used to oppress Makerereans.
