Mugambe Victor alias ‘’Kaana Ka Mbata’’ is a third-year Student pursuing a Bachelors degree in petroleum engineering at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).
Victor, like any other student, has always followed the services offered by Guild leaders in Ugandan Universities hoping to benefit from the services provided. However, he has noticed that several leaders are not serving to meet students’ interests, instead they obtain positions to fulfill their personal benefits which doesn’t benefit the common students.
“We have had leaders who think they shouldn’t mix with the rest of the people. Who think they should be rear even when they are not busy, leaders who think if the rest of the population is wearing a one million suit then theirs should be 100million,’’ he noticed.
Victor urges that leaders should always fulfill their promises to be on their electorates’ side after elections so as to have inclusive and participatory service delivery.
“When you stand up for people, you show that you’re on their side when they need help. This builds long-term loyalty, trust, credibility, commitment, and morale in your society, and it gives your people a confidence boost and they really believe in you. That’s how a leader should be and that’s Victor,’’ he emphasized.
He further says that there is a need to restructure the student guild such that it can perform for all the students without exclusion basing one’s position, academic performance and originality.
“We believe there’s more to attending university than just studying! We aim to ensure all the extra-curricular benefits of attending university are available to all students,’’ he concluded.
Victor is among the Presidential contestants at MUST in the forthcoming January Guild Presidential elections.
