In respect to the just concluded 90th Guild Elections, the Dean of Students and Secretary Guild Elections Petition Tribunal Winifred Kabumbuli has informed the Student Community about a petition challenging the results.
On Thursday, 7th March, 2024, Makerere University students went to polls and the official declaration by the 90th Electoral Commission indicated that a one Lubega Vincent Nsamba, affiliated with the National Unity Platform (NUP), had secured the position of Guild President.
Nsamba garnered 2540 votes in the online election, beating his closest rival Ariho Edmond, who closely trailed with 2536 votes.
It is no surprise that the latter opted for a petition since his loss was by a very slight variance.
The petition was received by the Dean of Students, who doubles as the Secretary Guild Elections Petition Tribunal, on 10th March,2024.
“Notice is hereby given that Mr. Edmond Ariho, one of the candidates in the 90th guild elections has disputed the outcome of the elections, in which Mr. Vincent Nsamba Lubega emerged the winner. He has lodged the petition, dated March, 10, 2024, with the secretary to the Guild Elections Petition Tribunal,” the Dean noted.
She as well appealed to the student community and all stakeholders to remain calm while the petition is being processed by the Guild Elections Petition tribunal.
At the moment, Nsamba’s win is disputed and what remains to be seen is the tribunal’s decision on how to serve justice to all parties involved.
