If there is one MAK culture that’s never going to be extinct, it’s the Lumumba Vs Mitchell hall beef. These two halls proved to have settled scores last Tuesday as Mitchelites didn’t disrupt the Lumumba hall rally but Lumumbists will always find all ways to provoke this prevailing peace break.
Yesterday, teargas was fired as far as Freedom square and senate to disperse the two fighting camps. Police was forced to fire tear gas and live bullets after Lumumbists led by Simon Wanyera a.k.a the revolutionary son stormed Mitchell carrying posters of William Karamagi, their candidate and tried to force their way in. According to the hall rules, posters of candidates that don’t reside in the respective halls where the rally is being held are not supposed to be displayed but left outside and picked up there after.
As Lumumbists provoked the RGB[Rat Guard Brigade] (Mitchel hall’s student security), it swung into action and turned Mitchell into a kickboxing club. After numerous attempts by police to separate these rival camps failed, tear gas and live bullets were employed to disperse the rowdy crowds and the two fighting camps.
As if this wasn’t enough to bring the fight to an end, amidst the large clouds of smoke from tear gas, empty bottles and stones were seen flying between the Rat Guard Brigade and the Lumumbists.
Mitchell hall canteens reaped big out of the scuffle as they made a life time’s sales yesterday. As more tear gas was fired, students tried to save their precious sense of sight by buying water to wash off the poisonous gas that was making them shade tears.
It wasn’t long until the canteens ran out of water and running trench water looked clean in the tear faded eyes of the supporters.
Makerereans are this used to such scuffles; minutes later, they had all filled up the quadrangle again and the rally resumed except for the Lumumbists who were being blocked at the swimming pool from making their disruptive way to Mitchell again.
