A scuffle ensued between students and Police outside the upper wing of Makerere University’s main library today evening as four-time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye made a surprise appearance at the last rally of the 2017/2018 MAK guild race.
It all started when a big procession led by FDC’s flag bearer Kato Paul was making its way towards the freedom square for the final rally. When the procession reached EASLIS below the old library building, it stopped all of a sudden and Besigye emerged from the rooftop a tinted Toyota Prado, waving his trademark victory sign. The sight of the man that some see as the face of political persecution and the struggle for liberation in Uganda sent the students into a frenzy.
It is at that point that Police which had been uncharacteristically deployed in large numbers throughout the university swung into action and attempted without success to disperse the surging crowd of students away from Besigye’s car.
But as the situation threatened to go out of hand, Police started firing live bullets and teargas canisters into the air to break up the crowd. The swarm of students was seen scampering into different directions as activities in the fully packed Freedom Square where momentarily brought to a standstill, where majority of the students appeared oblivious of Besigye’s presence.
After dispersing the students, Police towed away Besigye’s car to an unknown destination and the main rally proceeded without incident.
