“When we released an announcement in May calling for models to showcase, Martha texted me and I gave her a shot. When she walked on the run way on Saturday, she was not a disappointment but a model to look out for. She is a quick learner and has the height too” These were the words of Lukyamuzi Raymond, the CEO of the new Ford Model Management Agency and a third year student of the Bachelors in Public Administration at Uganda Christian University, (UCU) Mukono campus.
The Fashion Meets Music Launch night show that took place at the Vintage Lounge in Naalya on Saturday was every eventful moment you would not want to miss at a runway show. From Emcee Ronix trying to auction the models clothings and the buyers wanting a greater package to include the girls putting them on, to watching hot models walking in high heels and looking seductively 6 feet tall.
Revelers had a great time yet the sight of Martha, a student from Kyambogo University fascinated many. She had talent. With her catwalk, she swayed to persuade. She walked to impress. While on the stage, she knew when to turn left and when to turn right. She knew exactly what angle she had to look at the audience, invoking only intense applauds from the viewers who had all their phone camera flashes directed at her. Her talent was appreciated.
She was not the only thing to look out for that night. There were lots of models about 20 that the agency walked on the runway. Models from Makerere University, UCU, International University of East Africa, KYU and Makerere University Business School who showcased traditional attire, the bitenge and all sorts of the modern clothing.
A fashion designer Latif Junior took to the stage to knit a couple of clothes in under 3 minutes that were ready for wear by the models. He placed an electric sowing machine at the center of the runway, and laid his other equipment on his stage, three robes from which he made some dresses and a short- live cloth construction. As much as many were not impressed with the design he made, he was quite impressive to watch him doing his thing.
The majority of the viewers in the audience came from UCU students whose presence was noticeable everywhere at the event posing for pictures at the event banner, dominating at the counter with purchases of booze to drink. The students also attended the free show in solidarity and support for their friend, the CEO among other owners of the agency, who the students seemed to believe in. They enjoyed the night, sipping booze and nodding their heads, shaking bodies to the mixes of DJ Allan and Andre throughout the night.
Ian Martin Hemsworth, a fashionista from UCU was so impressed.
“The show” he says “was awesome. It left me speechless.”
To him, it is not a common thing that someone gets to put up awesome work and also pulls great crowds like Ford did over the weekend “especially when it’s your first showcase but Ford modelling management showed us that they are going to be something big in the industry.”
