The prestigious IKON Awards returned for its highly anticipated second edition, held on March 23rd, 2024, at the Kampala Serena Conference Center.
The awards ceremony, aimed at celebrating outstanding individuals and entities in the Ugandan cinema and television industries, provided a platform for recognition and constructive change within the entertainment sector.
Betty Amongi, the Minister of Gender, Labour, & Social Development, graced the event as the chief guest, highlighting the government’s support for the creative arts sector.
Hosted by Anita Fabiola and Ronnie MC Vex, the ceremony welcomed special guests, including renowned Nollywood sensations such as Osita Iheme, Ramsey Nouah, Nancy Isime, and Uche Ateli, adding an extra layer of prestige to the occasion.
Voting for this year’s awards was conducted online by the esteemed members of the IKON Awards Academy, comprised of last year’s winners. From a pool of 203 compelling submissions, the official list of nominations and winners for the 2024 IKON Awards was unveiled, showcasing exceptional talent and creativity across various categories.
Among the winners were “Unheard” by Polly Kamukama and Joseph Ken Ssebaggala, which clinched the title of Best Film, with Joseph Ken Ssebaggala also receiving recognition as the Best Director for the same film. Jackline Katusiime’s stellar performance in “Unheard” earned her the title of Best Actress in a Leading Role, while Henry Nathan Katongole impressed as the Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role in “The Passenger.”
Other notable winners included Blair Koono for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in “Enkuba” and Allen Musumba for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in “The Passenger.” The technical aspects of filmmaking were also celebrated, with accolades for Best Sound, Best Editor, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, and more.
In addition to recognizing established talent, the IKON Awards also honored emerging stars and rising talents in the industry.
King Missy was crowned as the IKON Rising Star, while Nancy Isime received the African IKON Award for her contributions to the continent’s entertainment scene.
Furthermore, the IKON Awards paid tribute to industry veterans, with Michael Wawuyo Sr. receiving the Life Achievement Award for his significant contributions to Ugandan cinema and television.
The IKON Awards 2024 served as a testament to the vibrancy and diversity of Uganda’s entertainment landscape, showcasing the talent, creativity, and passion of individuals within the industry.
As the event concluded, it left a lasting impression, inspiring hope and excitement for the future of Ugandan cinema and television.
