“They Wanted to Ignore Him but I Gave Him a Push”: Bebe Cool Claims Credit for Joshua Baraka’s Rise

Veteran musician Bebe Cool has once again stirred debate after claiming he played a key role in pushing Joshua Baraka into the spotlight at a time when Ugandan audiences were reluctant to embrace him.

Speaking while unveiling the Bebe Cool List 2025, the Gagamel boss said many Ugandans initially overlooked Joshua Baraka simply because he sang in English, a choice that did not immediately resonate with the local market. According to Bebe Cool, it was his early recognition and support that helped shift public perception.

“Ugandans wanted to ignore Joshua Baraka because he sings in English, but I noticed him and gave him a push, and now he’s appreciated by everyone,” Bebe Cool said.

The statement has sparked mixed reactions across social media, with some praising Bebe Cool for spotting talent early, while others accuse the veteran artist of trying to take too much credit for Baraka’s success.

Joshua Baraka, known for his smooth vocals and global sound, has steadily built a following both locally and internationally. His music has found space on global playlists and international stages, earning him recognition beyond Uganda’s borders. Many fans argue that Baraka’s rise is largely due to his consistency, heavy investment, and refusal to conform to local trends.

However, insiders note that endorsement from established industry figures like Bebe Cool can significantly influence local acceptance, especially in an industry where validation from veterans often shapes audience opinion.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: Joshua Baraka is no longer being ignored. Whether his success is credited to personal grind, global appeal, or timely backing from industry heavyweights, his position in Uganda’s new wave of artists is firmly secured.

Neither Joshua Baraka nor his team has publicly responded to Bebe Cool’s remarks.
