DERRICK MUGABE
Sharon Auma is a third year Journalism and Communication student at the Ivory tower who has fought her way into the fashion world. Despite being raised by a single mum, Sharon always dreamt about being a queen. This 20yr old Ugandan version of Selena Gomez’s beauty stood for her right from primary when all teachers and pupils used to refer to her as Miss Nsambya. Determined to put her beauty to a test, she contested in the first Mirinda Miss Teen at the age of 13 and managed to get herself a slot in the top ten. The race proved not to be her piece of cake but it opened gates to contacts. It wasn’t long after that she joined the company of Sarah Nyamwenge (Trainer Miss Tourism) as an usher and aide in her fashion shows where she started gaining the momentum for her dream as a beauty queen.
In for big things, this cutie was scouted by JoramMuzira (one of the Miss Uganda Organisers) in her first year and that’s when she sank her teeth in what came to be a dream come true. This at first did not prove easy as small pox smashed up her skin during the Miss Uganda regionals in Gulu town but since God took all his architectural time to create her, she beat all odds and made it to the top ten. Her aim then was showing people that there is more to her beauty, making her mum proud of her being the only child and showing Uganda that Northern babes are not only good at pounding Kipoli but have beautiful hearts, pretty minds and souls too.
At the Miss Uganda boot camp, Sharon came 3rd in the top ten and through the questions and answer test, she shone among The Top 5.
“From home I came alone to support my girl but I was so moved when I realised that I wasn’t alone but with the whole Speke Resort hall”, recalls her mum about the unwavering support the crowd showed Auma.
Things did not go her way though as Leah Kalanguka drove away with the crown leaving her with a sub-crown of Miss Uganda North 2015/2015.. but her No.4 position was not a bad one either.
“Life after Miss Uganda contest wasn’t the same, I was no longer the kid I used to be before,” Sharon says.
She had gotten a lot of experience now on how to talk, communicate and body language. However, as a second year student then, she had to run back to The Ivory Tower and catch up. After several chats with Rodger Mugisha, she embarked on her responsibilities as Miss North especially doing several projects for her region. Currently, she’s endorsing KINAFROS charity fashion show and in accordance to her gained skills, she was incorporated into NTV and is now aboard the Campus Edge cruise that’s taking campusers attention across the country.
To this pretty girl though, this isn’t where she wants to be. Her main goal is to own a PR Organisation #Girl of valour one day.
Her advice is that everyone should standup and let passion drive them. If you feel your childhood dream is to be a dancer then grab your dancing shoes, football player, fashionista, artiste and so on… just give it a try and let nothing stop you.
