Owing to the Ugandan culture and several other platforms, the industry has become a force to reckon with. No wonder several men and women have become style icons in this African nation. In this article, I will present the names of several fashionistas who have stolen the limelight. This list includes some emerging youngsters too.
Rapael Kasule
Raphael Kasule’s journey into the fashion world began at the age of 13 when his mother’s sewing machine piqued his imagination. Today he is the proud owner of the fashion brand K-Rafael Couture. Raphael’s feather on the cap was his design for the official ceremonial wear for the Ugandan Olympic team in the 2016 Rio Olympics. This design was received with tremendous cheer. Raphael dreams of opening outlets all over Uganda, thereby creating employment opportunities for the poor.
Sylvia Owori
Sylvia Owori is the chairperson of the Zipa Modelling Agency. She feels that fashion is related to a person’s identity. She is of the opinion that the world gets to know a person by his/her choice of clothes. She looks at fashion as a human being’s way of communicating with the world.
Whenever she sets out to design something new, in her mind’s eye she has the picture of an African woman who is busy and is celebrating her newfound strength and optimism. You can’t beat that, can you?
Anita Beryl Ahikiriza
Anita Beryl Ahikiriza is the founder and CEO of Beryl Qouture and her motto is to bring out the inner style and beauty of her customers. Today her design house has grown extremely popular all over Uganda. Fashion represents several values to Anita. She feels it is a way of living, a way to let the whole world know your feelings without speaking a single word.
When she creates designs, she aims to make her client good by wearing the costume. She keeps in mind all these values when she designs. Terrific, isn’t it?
Xenson aka Samson Ssenkaaba
Xenson, aka Samson Ssenkaaba is the owner of the Xenson fashion brand. Xenson is a multi-media artist. The Xenson brand is influenced mainly by the grand African culture, the arts and the exceedingly enchanting dance forms of the continent, including Hip-Hop. Xenson’s creations try to link past historical idioms to the here and now. With such an ideal, no wonder his creations are so popular!
This list would be incomplete without mentioning some of the other popular fashion designers of Uganda. These include names like Charles Kasozi, Brenda Maraka, Philip Buyi and several others. The Ugandan fashion design industry can definitely be expected to take rapid strides with such talented people in the scene.
