In this fast changing world, choosing a course to study at university is becoming a challenge. There are so courses taught in universities with little relevance to the job market. This has seen many graduates failing to get employed due to lack of the requisite skills.
These poor courses make it even worse in an era where jobs are to scarce to find. It therefore adds value to a student to go to the right university and study a relevant course. In this article we profile fifteen courses which are taught at Victoria University from which a student can choose from and stand high chances of getting a job upon graduation.
Bachelor of Science in Oil & Gas Accounting – 3 years
The oil and gas sector is tipped to be key driver of Uganda’s economy. The sector is being prepared for takeoff and once it does, over 15000 jobs will be created directly and indirectly. Under the Department of Petroleum and Gas Studies, Victoria University is preparing Ugandan students to acquire skills to work in extractives sector.
The Bachelor of Science in Oil & Gas Accounting is one course that has been introduced at the University and interested students can apply starting this January intake. To qualify for this course, one must have studied up to A’level and having a bias in Math and Economics.
The BSc in Oil and Gas Accounting is a new course designed to develop specialized knowledge and skills specifically for an accounting career in the oil and gas industry. The course will enable students to develop a critical awareness of the key issues in accounting for upstream oil and gas exploration, development and production activities. The course is delivered by respected academics with relevant industry experience.
Certificate in Oil & Gas Health, Safety & Environmental Management – 2 years
Victoria University provides a variety of certificates in oil and gas but the Certificate in Oil & Gas Health, Safety & Environmental Management stands out as it addresses critical elements of the oil and gas business. The oil business is an environmentally sensitive business therefore it needs experts.
This course gives an introduction to the health, safety and environmental challenges encountered in the oil and gas industry. It provides an insight into the main drivers of the regulatory framework that govern compliance in this sector and their importance in protecting people, assets and the environment.
You can also study a Certificate in Oil & Gas Law, Certificate in Oil and Gas Management, Certificate in Supply Chain and Logistic Management and Certificate in Oil & Gas Project Management all accredited by IP3.
Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Dietetics – 4 years
This is one of the new courses in Uganda. Dietetics is a profession which applies the science of nutrition in the maintenance of health in each of the life cycle stages as well as to the dietary management of various disease conditions.
This 4 year dietetics degree program equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to practice in any of the 3 key focus areas of the profession, i.e. Therapeutic Nutrition, Community Nutrition and Food Service Management.
Isabalija the vice chancellor of Victoria University explained that this course provides the ability to comprehend, analyse, synthesize and apply selected theories basic sciences and clinical placements to support general practice of health care.
Bachelor of Midwifery Science -2 years
This is generally a new course in Uganda. Midwifery practitioners previously trained in nursing schools but now they can get a degree at Victoria University. This post-diploma midwifery science top-up degree program is designed to enhance the student’s ability to use community–oriented, evidence-based approaches in the provision of midwifery care that is responsive to the needs of the community in both rural and urban settings. The Bachelor of Midwifery Science program covers two academic years, which is a five (5) semesters degree course.
Bachelor of Nursing Science – 4 years
The curriculum is designed to meet the challenges of healthcare delivery. The course is highly demanding and designed to use community-orientated, evidence and skills-based approaches in order to be highly responsive to the needs of urban and rural communities.
Graduates will gain the ability to apply a broad base of knowledge, theory and scientific research to the real life practical context. Students all get skills to manage people. Learners under this course acquire leadership and management skills needed to fully manage a variety of healthcare scenarios and provide effective healthcare delivery.
Bachelor of Science in Public Health – 3 years
This is another course that addresses health care sector challenges facing the country including low numbers of qualified practitioners. This evidence-based curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to be able to monitor community health by identifying health needs, implementing policies that promote health, evaluating health services and eliminating health disparities.
Bachelor in Business Information Systems – 3 years
Because of the emerging digital edge era, more and more companies are integrating their information systems, allowing separate divisions to share information and make more informed decisions with a broader organizational view.
This course gives a holistic knowledge of the importance of information management within the wider organizational context. It also provides a firm grounding on the leading trends and key aspects of information and communications systems, and how they can be applied.
It also provides the skills to manage both information systems and human resources with a high degree of professional ethics.
International Relations and Diplomatic Studies – 3 years
The study of International Relations develops specific skills and knowledge which provide an advantage for employment opportunities in foreign affairs, diplomacy, intelligence, international research and consultancy, military and defence administration, international journalism, international human rights organisations, international development organizations, business and trade, and international hospitality. This course shapes you to work in a global and diplomatic arena.
Diploma in International Relations
This Diploma course is new and will start this January, like the Bachelors, the students gets the knowledge and understanding to initiate and carry out projects in the field of International Relations, the ability to be critical, the ability to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialized and non-specialist in the field of International Relations and Diplomacy. To qualify, one must be a senior six leaver or any professional looking for more or global skills.
Bachelor of Environmental Science – 3 years
This is another course beginning in January. In its effort to be the first choice university, Victoria University is introducing new courses that address current and topical issues like the environment. The vice chancellor explained that ‘Victoria University wants to give solutions’ and that ‘things that don’t provide solutions to the economy we slow them down.’. THIS means that the introduction of this social course is a calculated move to be part of a global agenda to preserve the environment.
Diplomatic Studies and Diploma in Tourism and Hotel Management
Tourism in Uganda is one area that lacked professionalism because there are no committed schools teaching comprehensive and market driven tourism courses; this leaves the sector to grow on its own. This has seen the sector flooded with workers who lack the international skills required therefore this Diploma course in diplomatic tourism and hotel management will fill the void in the market. Students who will graduate from this course will be able to offer the required standardized services and required by the sector.

Bachelor of Business Administration (3 Years)
At no point in recent history has there been a more relevant time to study the dynamics of business and its role within the global environment. Earning a Bachelors of Business Administration makes you competition in the job market.
Bachelor of Procurement and Logistics – 3 Years
The Bachelor of Procurement and Logistics is an appropriate goal for students who want to acquire extensive skills and knowledge. Students are empowered to possess integrated skills and knowledge in accounting, marketing, strategic management, e-procurement, international business, negotiation in purchasing and supply, legal aspects in purchasing and supply chain management.
Bachelor of Banking and Finance – 3 Years
This program aims to provide comprehensive instruction and training in modern financial services, suitable for a wide range of students in key areas of banking and finance management and related disciplines. Students learn to communicate effectively on all levels and acquire leadership skills in the banking industry to become an initiator of change by making complex and difficult decisions using modern finance, marketing and management analysis methods.
