As 2019 is coming to an end and we are remaining with a few hours to enter into 2020, the year has been a busy, full of happiness and sadness around universities. Many students joined universities while others were graduating from various disciplines, on a sad note many students have been murdered, tortured and some cases of suicide were registered across universities, we pray that these bad acts remain in 2019 and enter 2020 with fresh minds.
Campus Bee decided to bring to you a summary of 2019 from it’s beginning to it’s end:
January 2019
It started with Makerere University’s 69th graduation where thousands of students graduated. Among those was the former Miss Uganda and Miss Africa Quiin Abenakyo who graduated with a bachelor of Business Computing from MUBS. After her graduation, many people came out criticizing her graduation claiming that she wasn’t on the graduation list.
Makerere University lecturers strike
On 21st January 2019, Makerere University teaching staff went on strike against the university human resource policy which empowers Makerere to dismiss any staff who has cases before court. This brought a stand still in the University programs, students who had reported back found empty lecture rooms and they started hanging around.
February 2019
Ugandans were surprised to hear that their President was among the world’s best Presidents. New York University ranked president Museveni among the best presidents in the world basing on the analysis that was carried by World Bank experts. They named him basing on his leadership skills and how influential he has been to his people.
March 2019
Social media slay queen faked pregnancy to get money from her campus lover. This was one of the worst moments to our friend Isaac (not his real name) when he found out that his twitter lover was having a fake tummy pretending to be his pregnancy. At first Isaac wanted to skip the trick because he was sure that he used protection but he was later on convinced by his lover that she is having his heir. But the slay queen was only getting her upkeep from Isaac.
April 2019
The first Miss Curvy pageant happened in Uganda which attracted most of the campus babes who thought that they were curvy enough to win the contest. Later on Miss Belinda Nansasi emerged the Most Curvy lady in Uganda and she went away with a brand new car. However some people said that the car was a second hand which was not even working properly.
May 2019
MUST strikes
With just few weeks to end of semester examinations, the teaching and non teaching staff at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) laid down their tools protesting against the University Vice Chancellor Prof Celestino Obua and this left every facility at the university locked with at least two padlocks!
Later on the students led by their guild President by then Katongole Mike joined the strike demanding the coming back of lecturers to teach and issue examinations. In the end, the semester was extended by one week.
July 2019
The whole country was shocked by the murder of Brother Mugarura in one the hostels at Kyambogo University. Later on it was discovered that his own dependant Asiimwe Robert is the one who had killed him. Asiimwe revealed that he was tired of being Brother’s girlfriend. Right now Asiimwe is still in prison.
August 2019
A Fresher identified as Henry Suubi reported to Makerere University with a metallic suitcase. His photos with a metallic case went viral on social media which created blessings for him. He met the French ambassador who offered him a scholarship to study French, Suubi received an iPhone and also given a scholarship to study Mechanical engineering at Makerere University.
September 2019
Makerere University Medical student committed suicide after losing millions of money in one of the online investment company. It was said he first went to Mulago mortuary to see how dead bodies are arranged.
In the same month Makerere University Law students were surprised when their colleague and the People Power spokesperson Mr Joel Ssenyonyi revealed that he is still a virgin though his course mates were tempting.
October 2019
This was full of Makerere University students strikes against the 15% tuition increamement policy which lasted for two weeks.
UCU’s final graduation ceremony takes place at the university main Campus in Mukono. Several students are awarded accolades for attaining first class degrees.
The Guild representative Councilors ( GRCs ) at Kyambogo University moved a motion of impeaching their Guild President HE Tundulu Jonathan. Even though the move was a success but it was latter on stopped by the University management over shortage of funds to conduct fresh Guild elections. Tundulu is still the Guild President of Kyambogo University.
November 2019
This the month where Kyambogo University held it’s 16th graduation ceremony and a number of celebrities finished their studies and these include Vivian Tendo who sang Hajjat wa hajji.
A photo of a female graduate from St Lawrence University also left many online men panting.
December 2019
President Museveni graced Kyambogo graduation and thanked them for being well behaved unlike their colleagues who think “strikes are the only solution”.
Sharon Mbabazi a student who made bricks to raise her tuition while at campus graduated from Muteesa 1 Royal University and immediately she was awarded with a scholarship to study Masters in public Administration at Victoria University.
