Christopher Erimu, a Soroti-based student pursuing a Diploma in Animal Production & Management at Busitema University (Arapai Campus) has vowed to take Busitema University to court over the University’s online teaching and learning interface that he alleges has adversely affected his eye-sight.
In an interview with the Campus Bee, Christopher narrated at length, how events unfolded hitherto. He informed us that the impugned online classes were kick started by the University administration one week after the president had, among other measures to curb the increasing Covid-19 infection rates, declared an immediate closure of all schools, universities and other tertiary institutions.
Furthermore, that Busitema University employs two approaches for the online classes. The first is through Zoom and the second one, is through the University eLearning Application called the Learners’ Management System (LMS). According to Chrsitopher, the University LMS is exceedingly inefficient and profoundly defective in that, its ‘download’ options are simply cosmetic and non-functional. Accordingly, the students have no option but to copy the notes (Fracture Management Course-notes) intended for download, directly from the Application dashboard for hours on end, due to the imminent deadlines usually at hand.
Christopher further intimated to the Campus Bee that he started experiencing anomalies with his vision a few days after he’d started using the faulty University FMS and he was advised by a physician to visit an ophthalmologist for further prognosis. On visiting the ophthalmologist, the diagnosis revealed that Christopher had developed ‘Retinal-nerve’ complications and that there was a direct nexus with the university’s detrimental online eLearning system.
On inquiring about the proposed cost of treatment, Christopher informed the Campus Bee that the ophthalmologist told him that the cost would be hefty and needed to liaise with his guardians first. In apprehension of being compelled to pay such exorbitant and colossal sums of money over what he believes to be the University’s negligence, Christopher has instructed a Soroti-based Law Firm known as Jorem Edonu & Co. Advocates.
His lawyers have further advised him that he indeed has a cause of action, in light of the fact that the University owes him a duty of care and that it should have insured against such foreseeable risks. Christopher further told us that many other Busitema Students are suffering in silence and that the University is hell-bent on maintaining the system till the return to physical classes.
