Recently, Makerere University’s College of Natural Sciences (CONAS) emerged winners of the Makerere University Annual Inter-college Debate Tournament. This Team, dabbed Team ‘Winnie Anyango’ comprised of Eric Kyambadde Kisakye and Emmanuel Kiwanuka.
It will be recalled that the tournament had attracted 32 teams from all Makerere University constituent colleges and schools. The tournament was based on the much celebrated British Parliamentary Debate Model and a number of novice debaters across signed up to represent their colleges.
The Core Adjudication Panel of the tournament was comprised of Mr. Manzi Surumani (Chief Adjudicator), Ms. Martha Nassanga (Deputy-Chief Adjudicator) and Ms. Ebise Emiru Angose (Deputy Chief Adjudicator). The Tournament Equity Team was composed of Mr. Barry Ainomugisha and Mr. Benson Mayanja. All the aforementioned are seasoned and decorated debaters and it is believed that they delivered a world class online debate experience.
The four Teams that made it to the finals were from the College of Health Sciences (CHS), two teams from the College of Natural Sciences (CONAS) and one team from the School of Law (SOL). From those, the first and second runners-up were Primah Birungi and Harry Mwesigwa as well as Prossy Adokorach and Isabella Kabacwamba from the School of Law and the College of Natural Sciences, respectively. The Tournament’s Best Speaker was Hannah Arinaitwe from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS).
The theme of the Tournament was, “Covid-19 and the New Globalization Era” and it was organized by the Makerere Debating Union (MDU) in conjunction with the Makerere Justice & Constitutional Affairs Ministry.
