Guild Presidents of known Universities in the country have pleaded with the Government of Uganda to support international students stranded in various universities across the country.
On Wednesday, the Guild Presidents led by the Guild President of Makarere University Business School Robinson Ogwang Apunyo met Major General (Retired) Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, Minister for National Security to discuss matters affecting the International students.
Campus Bee caught up with Guild President of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Females Campus Nantongo Bashira who was part of the team.
Nantongo revealed to Campus Bee that the Guild Presidents need the Government of Uganda to bail out the students amid the continued closure of schools to curb COVID-19 pandemic.
“The trip basically was to sound a trumpet to the Government to divert their attention to these students who are seemingly in their custody by providing relief to them,” she told Campus Bee.
The IUIU Females Campus Guild President says the meeting was fruitful.
“The Minister forwarded the issue to the office of the Prime Minister and promised immediate response from the Taskforce on COVID-19,” Nantongo says.
Nantongo told Campus Bee that the Guild Presidents need Government to help the international students with either food or financial support to enable them to survive the storms they are currently passing through.
Some of the Guild Presidents that were also part of the team are Agaba Kenneth, Guild President Uganda Christian University, Nawamanya Godfrey, Guild President Kabale University, and Ayiko Herbert, Guild President Gulu University.
Uganda has several international students. These students are from other African countries, Europe, and America among others. Most of the student didn’t travel back during the forced closure of schools.
