Guild Presidents Resolve to Pen Ministry of Education on E-Learning

Guild Presidents in Uganda under their umbrella body called Guild Presidents Union say they want to pen Ministry of Education on E-Learning amid closure of schools in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

Tuesday, 22nd June, 2021, the Guild Presidents met virtually to discuss on how students can continue learning using the Open Distance Learning (Online Approach) approach amid the new wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda.

The meeting that was chaired by His Excellency Robinson Ogwang Apunyo who is the Guild President of Makerere University Business School (MUBS) under their umbrella body Guild Presidents Union has resolved to engage the Ministry of Education to find solutions of easing online learning such as scrapping off “Over the Top” Tax (OTT Tax) for all students in Uganda.

The Guild Presidents also agreed to pen the Ministry of Education to requesting possible remedies to bail out students that may not be able to attend online classes due to various reasons such as lack of gadgets, data and expertise.

The Guild Presidents have appointed Patrick Kayizi, the Guild President of Uganda Technology and Management Institute to head the ad hoc committee to write to Ministry of Education on E-Learning.

The leaders have also appointed the Guild President of Islamic University in Uganda Welunga Yusuf to chair an ad hoc committee that will court the Prime Minister of Uganda Honorable Robinah Nabbanja on how to support all stranded students in Uganda during the impromptu holiday.

The meeting was attended by Guild Presidents from universities namely Makerere University Business School, Islamic University in Uganda, Uganda Christian University, Uganda Martyrs University, Gulu University, Kabale University and Busitema University, Uganda Technology and Management Institute University,
Bishop Stuart University, Mountains of the Moon University, Soroti School of Nursing Institute and Executive Secretary to GPAU.

Recently, President Yoweri Museveni ordered closure of academic institutions as one way of containing the new wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda. Since its onset of the novel virus, over 500 people in Uganda and over 3 Million worldwide have succumbed to it.
