A lecturer of Sociology has warmed hearts after a photo emerged on social media in which he was babysitting a child to one of his students (who is a mother) as she answered her exams.
In a tweet published recently, the lecturer – Okimait l’Olaki explained the importance of ‘walking the talk’ about what is taught in institutions of learning citing childhood studies/development.
“One of my students who is also a mother had taken her test but has no babysitter. So I offered to babysit. We can’t just be teaching childhood studies/development without practice & support” he said.
His tweet received very positive and lovely reactions because it is not every day that we see such acts of kindness and consideration.
With the exams coinciding with the student mother’s baby-daycare, she could have been left with no alternative childcare options of convenience.
Aside baby day-care programmes, consideration of support systems for students facing unexpected adversities, such as this student mother, should be taken up as this author deems it a move in the right direction.
Okimait holds a PhD from Stellenbosch University, Master’s Degree in Childhood studies from Norwegian University of Science and Technology and he is a former assistant lecturer at Kampala International University (KIU).
