A section of university students have had a day or so on social media site Twitter, hillariously dicussing what they’d rather opt for among the two.
The hashtag (#HostelVersusHall) that was more of a source of fun and laughter than a serious engagement attracted students from several universities across Uganda.
Freshers every year face the dilemma of having to choose between these two places of residence incase the university, parents or circumstances dont dictate where they should go.
Makerere being the one with the most number of halls of residence, boasts of the highest population of hall residing university students in all universities and I guess we can easily predict where hall sympathisers in the hashtag lie.
But is hostel better than hall or vice versa?
Among the advancements we could cite out as these students joked and ridiculed eachother was curfew. It must be universal, halls have curfew and at the clock of midnight, doors will be closed. Hostels on the other hand are open all night.
Hostel stress comes up when you get visitors and they have to go through procedures almost similar to a Somali’s entering the United States.
Then there is the issue of communal bathrooms and toilets. All halls of residence were structured that way. Bathrooms and toilets are shared. It is only in girls’ halls at Makerere that they laboured to put sinks in atleast each room. Hostels on the other hand (well, some to be specific) have self contained rooms where incase you get a single room, you would live an entirely self dependant life.
What I have seen, heard and grew to like about halls is the fact that those students look out for eachother. They will treat one case of theft like it is on them all.
Much as sometimes they manhandle suspects and situations go out of hand, you would really see that they are concerned.
In hostel, on the other hand, no one cares whether your room has been robbed clean, whether you havent had power and water for a month or if your flat iron has mulfunctioned.
On the lighter side, however, the jokes were interesting. If parents were to read everything on that hashtag, universities would have to construct more halls of residence to accommodate you all.
