Did you know 12 August is The International Youth day? Well it is, and this year the Youth celebrated their day in style with Marie Stopes Uganda at Makerere,Kavule. The event was premiered by the opening of a free Youth corner which every youth in the country is now free to access at zero cost. The Youth in attendance enjoyed games, drama, music, socializing, learning among others.
The all free event provided the youth a chance to get free counselling, know their HIV status, discuss matters concerning their sexual reproductive health and get family planning information.
Nathan Mugalu Balirwana, an adolescent counselor at Mild May Uganda encouraged the youth to work hard and do away with poverty.
“Poverty hurts more than cancer,” Balirwana stated.
He later explained to the bee that as much as the youth are told to be cautious, they need money which causes desperacy and pushes them to get involved in certain risky behavior.
The Youth Councillor Kawempe Division, Martha however re-assured the youth that their respective divisions are mandated to finance their business projects if they apply for them.
Mary Nalumansi, one of the attendees told the bee that the event was more than a dream come true.
“I came to have fun, dance and entertain people but I have also learnt something and made new friends. It was worth it,” Nalumansi commented.
The day concluded with Youth enjoying games, listening to music while Youth leaders discussed ways to influence eradication of poverty in young people and achieving sustainable development through sustainable production and consumption.
