“Destiny can only be delayed but never stopped.” It’s only now that I see the validity of this statement .
Up close with Leah Kagasa, the 21-year-old flashing lights – ready beauty, usher , freelance model, fashionista and now, Miss Uganda 2016, only confirms that she was born to dazzle. Kagasa is a third-year student of science in marketing at Nakawa based Makerere University Business School (MUBS). Our writer Samantha Agasha caught up with her for a chitchat.
Congratulations on your new acquired title. How does it feel being Miss Uganda???
Thank you Campus Bee. It feels so good and exciting to be Miss Uganda for this was like my childhood dream- so to finally achieve it is such a big deal for me.
What was it like in boot camp and who was your greatest competition?
Boot camp was tough but not as scary as everyone else thinks it is. It required a lot of sacrifice because some girls even had to quit their jobs but it was worth it. We learnt a lot from agriculture to teamwork and personality as well- so even if some girls didn’t win, right now their profiles are all the way up. On competition, all the girls were good especially those in top ten. Each one of those girls had that one trait that I would have loved to have but luckily I was deserving enough to be chosen that night.
Judging from what you have said, you actually expected to be crowned?
Like I said, every girl was good but in every race, there is always one winner. It was God’s Will, that’s all I can say.
Has being Miss Uganda impacted your life in any way as yet???
Of course, it has. Positively, I’ve had a closer relationship with my family who rallied for me votes. (laughs) Are you aware that I also won miss popularity??? (I nod in affirmative)
Also, my profile has hiked and there are some places i used to go to that now I can’t be seen in .
How do you intend to balance books with this acquired title?
Fortunately, I am graduating in January with my Bachelors degree in Science in Marketing so I don’t have to worry about that for now.
Apart from studies, what else have you been doing that is out of the box?
I used to usher and also did freelance modelling. I did Kampala fashion week, Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards last year among others but this year, I focused on improving myself in line with being a beauty queen so I did more of photo shoots.
No Ugandan has ever been Miss World, how do you intend to change this?
I think people are just ignorant about our Uganda and its beauty. This is a campaign I am going to champion when I go out there to represent my country inorder to win the Miss World crown. According to my predecessors, it’s a just question of personality that speaks for you and your country at large.
Who is your inspiration and why??
My parents. They have taught us to be moral in a world that embraces immorality, they are also very hard working and supportive in everything I do.
Any last words to Ugandans especially those who want to make it like you?
Just be you .
