In the heart of Kampala, ISBAT University is emerging as a hub for digital transformation—equipping students with cutting-edge skills in Artificial Intelligence (AI) that are not only enhancing their academic performance but also creating new avenues for income and innovation.
As Uganda’s economy gradually shifts toward digital solutions, ISBAT University is leading the charge in preparing its students for an AI-driven future. From business and IT to engineering and digital marketing, students across faculties are harnessing the power of AI to stay competitive in both local and global markets.
AI in the Classroom: From Theory to Practice
ISBAT has integrated AI-related modules into various programs, ensuring that students don’t just learn about AI in theory—but also apply it in real-world scenarios. Whether it’s using ChatGPT to assist with content creation, developing smart automation workflows in Python, or analyzing customer data using machine learning tools, ISBAT students are getting hands-on experience with the future of work.
“We no longer just teach students to use technology—we teach them to create it,” says Mr. Uday Kumar, Head of the Digital Marketing and IT Department. “AI is a central part of that transformation.”
Students in the Bachelor of Digital Marketing program, for example, are using AI tools like Canva AI, Copy.ai, and Jasper to generate content, build marketing strategies, and test campaigns—all skills that are highly demanded in today’s digital economy.
Making Money with AI
For many ISBAT students, AI is more than just a classroom subject—it’s an income stream.
Derrick Mbabazi, a second-year Software Engineering student, earns money by building chatbots for local businesses using platforms like Dialogflow and Chatfuel. “Some of my clients can’t afford full-time customer service staff, so I offer them AI bots that respond to FAQs on WhatsApp and Facebook. It’s affordable for them, and profitable for me.”
Similarly, digital marketing students are offering social media management, AI-powered copywriting, and content generation services to SMEs, NGOs, and startups across Kampala. Several have even launched their own online brands—selling everything from handmade crafts to digital courses—using AI to write product descriptions, automate customer service, and run targeted ads.
AI Clubs and Hackathons: Sparking Innovation
ISBAT has also encouraged extracurricular engagement in AI through tech clubs and innovation challenges. The university regularly hosts AI-focused bootcamps, webinars, and hackathons, giving students a platform to collaborate on projects, pitch business ideas, and network with industry leaders.
Earlier this year, the university launched the ISBAT AI & Innovation Hub, where students collaborate on AI projects ranging from smart agriculture solutions to facial recognition attendance systems. The hub has become a launchpad for student-led startups, many of which are gaining traction beyond campus.
Overcoming Challenges
While access to AI tools and training is growing, challenges remain. High data costs, limited exposure to advanced computing infrastructure, and a shortage of AI mentors can hinder progress. But ISBAT’s administration is working to bridge these gaps by partnering with global tech companies and offering students access to cloud computing platforms like Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
“There’s still a digital divide, but we’re breaking it down brick by brick,” says Mr. Uday. “Our mission is to make every student AI-literate—and job-ready.”
Shaping Uganda’s Digital Workforce
With Uganda’s youthful population and growing tech ecosystem, institutions like ISBAT are playing a critical role in shaping the next generation of AI developers, digital marketers, and tech entrepreneurs. By empowering students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in artificial intelligence, ISBAT is not just preparing them for employment—it’s preparing them to be innovators and job creators.
As the world continues to evolve, ISBAT University students are proving that with the right tools, mentorship, and mindset, the future belongs to those bold enough to build it.
