Amanya Tumukunde, a 25-year-old and son to Gen. Henry Tumukunde, is seeking his first term in office as the Western Youth Member of Parliament focused on issues rather than his rival, Mwine Mpaka, (son to Isingiro North MP Bright Rwamirama) who many critics say is contesting just for the sake of “family prestige.”
Amanya’s manifesto pushes for an overhaul of the education system in order to strengthen competitiveness on the global stage. For Amanya, that is a more urgent issue compared to be sent to represent the youths just for the sake of “fame.”
“It is crystal clear that youth in Western Uganda will vote for someone who is focused on bettering the lives of youths [Amanya] rather than someone whose aim is to just share parliament with his father [Mpaka]” Leonard Atuk, a law student at Makerere University told this website when queried who stands a better chance of winning this seat.
The election is set to take place on February 29 in Fort Portal after it was postponed.
